When I launched Man On Second Baseball in February, I didn’t exactly know where the brainstorm was headed.

I knew I wanted to stay active in baseball, yet provide something unique and different. I also knew I wanted to start something on my own.

As for what that was, I wanted to bring a conversational tone to my coverage, and get away from the daily grind of the big leagues.

From 2002-2020, that’s all I knew as the Marlins beat reporter. All day, every day, every aspect of the organization was all consuming for 19 seasons.

As I embarked on my new venture, ManOn2nd, I wanted to explore more aspects of the game than update player injuries, report roster moves, write game stories and chase rumors. I’ve done literally thousands of those types of stories in two decades of covering the big leagues.

So I came up with the idea of having a Florida slant to my focus. I’ve long felt the state of Florida, and South Florida specifically, was a sleeping giant for baseball. So many great players are from the Sunshine State. So much baseball is played, year-round, in the Sunshine State. The talent filters down from the big leagues, to the colleges, to high schools. Spring Training and Minor League Baseball, as well, part of Florida’s sports fabric.

A mission of ManOn2nd is to illuminate the tremendous talent from the Sunshine State, as well as provide insights and analysis of the Marlins, Rays and MLB. We’ll be talking to these players. We’ll be at the Florida-based events. I’ve already spoken to several big league players from Florida, and each one of them talks about the “pride” they have having grown up or played in the state. Among them are Florida-natives Bo Bichette, Jonathan India and Nick Castellanos.

Hence, the idea of Man On Second Baseball “Where the focus is on Florida” was born.

Since my first post on this web site, I’ve learned that the written word, although still a passion, does not necessarily have the same reach it did when I first started covering the Marlins daily in 2002. Podcasting has become big, and with the help of Mike Sonbeek, we started the ManOn2nd podcast a few months back.

Many in the South Florida market are have read my work for nearly 20 years. Now, they’ll hear more of what I have to stay.

The podcast has caught on. We’ve had fun. Our content is first-rate, and we knew it was time for more.

For a while now we’ve been thinking about what is the next step for ManOn2nd. How to raise our profile and build our brand.

In talking with Mike, we realized Five Reasons Sports, founded by Ethan Skolnick, would be an ideal fit. @5ReasonsSports has all the sports in South Florida covered, which was appealing to ManOn2nd. We want to be a part of a company with a broad vision.

A few days ago, @ManOn2nd officially partnered with @5ReasonsSports. We are thankful, and couldn’t be more excited.

We have big plans. For us, the work, and the fun will now begin.

We enter this partnership with a clearer picture of what we expect to be. We will have great content, and great guests. My stories will still be posted on our manonsecondbaseball.com site, but now we’ll have more podcasts.

We’re in the process of looking for sponsors, and meeting with those who share our vision. I look forward to seeing where this will lead, and know it’s going to be fun.
